January 2nd 1840. Intensely cold.

Writeing [sic] up my books this morning,
wish to begin the year straight if possible.
Pa; called in with books for the children. Found Julia’s wax baby cracked by the cold. Went to the “Tabernacle” in the evening heard “Noah” on the
“Calamities of [Athans]; I went to sleep!!!
Eugene spent the evening with us. I gave him the “Boston Book.”
