1st of June. 1840. In this month Miss Hasbrouck [refers to Maria Hasbrouck, Garret’s unmarried sister, from Stone Ridge] paid us a visit of a fortnight(1). She remained until after the 4th. of July. “Dr Hasbrouck” came down also at this time for a few days. The weather was very warm, and oppressive. Mr H. went to engage board at “Oysters Bay”(2). We, concluded to go out to “Hyde Park Mansion”(3) six miles from New York. I attempted to ride out after my illness, could not get as far, had scarcely been out of my room, at that time.
(1)Fortnight: fourteen days, or two weeks.
(2)Oyster Bay: a town on Long Island.
