Rain from ten oclock P.M. untill night. Dave [Julia’s younger brother] brought me a note from C. to say Mrs Vradenburg, and their family would take tea with us. I made some preparations, but the rain prevented their comeing. this rain is just the thing to wash away the snow, and make the city pleasant. We had a “Broiled Turkey” for dinner. I spent the afternoon reading and amuseing the children. They are a never failing source of pleasure, and trouble.
