January 1st, 1852 19 Charlton St. New York
Thursday 1st of Jan.
Clear, mild, and charming day.
I was glad to see the
sun so bright for the sake of the young folks.
We did not receive calls, and my bosom was light
I took my cold bath, and went out for air, also to purchase
a thimble for Bell. The streets were full of gentlemen
and the male sex, but no ladies visible, stores closed, and
every thing put aside but pleasure, and good fellowship
Julia would have had a number of calls, a few
friends got in, but the majority were refused and left
Dr Duvall, Mr Depuy, & deWit, Mr Smith and Jones,
Mr Berger, Smith Berker, Mr Fulgraff dined with us.
Ferdinand & Bell passed the day. I felt wearied but tried
to be agreeable.
Rested on the sofa and felt better after tea.
Our evening was lively, Miss Tileston and Dr Duvall came in
to pass the evening. They gave us some Negro melodies, and
we enjoyed their fun & frolic.
All left at eleven oclock, and I went to my couch, quite
weary of pleasure.
Mr Hasbrouck, made a few calls, in his
carriage, took Louis & Remsen with him.
They returned to dinner. I did not dress to.day to day, both G. and
Julia, took me to task, but my reason was only fancy.
I cannot feel this season, it comes so soon, too soon
for my arrangements. Every thing has passed off well.
We all enjoy the good gifts of Providence, with health
and every luxury of life.
